Finished painting

So I finally finished that Hatsune miku piece of fanart that I started a few weeks back!

The process to painting her was a long and hard, but I feel I learned a lot from it. I can't wait to take what I've learned here, improve upon it, and streamline the process!

I really hope you all enjoy the finished product!

Practice practice practice

Here are more gesture drawings that I did at the park. Like usual, these were all mostly done in less than 10 seconds. Cept for the Tree.

Enjoy.

The anatomy of a faerie

For my anatomy class I had to do an anatomy project! I got to sorta freestyle it... So I decided I would do an Xray of a faerie! This old painting I started a while ago, remember it? Yup! Well I finished painting the figure! Then I took it in photoshop and on a new layer sketched and painted the bones. I truly feel that this was an enlightening experience for me as an artist, and I have learned a lot from it in terms of how anatomy affects form and gesture.

Maya Project 2

For my Intro to 3D modeling class, We had an assignment to model a face in low polys Well, after a while of work here it is. I used photo reference for the faces. Didn't feel like posting it though... It was of a female model. Her name was Claire.

Yup.. It's okay for my first low poly, and the topology I guess is good for a beginner like me. But honestly, I have a long way to go. And frankly... I could have edited this thing further, but I just couldn't stomach that piece of crap Maya for any longer.

I feel like actually doing meaningful artwork now. Artwork that goes beyond talentless clicking of a mouse.

A good day

Today I did gestures of a nude female model. This week my gestures I feel improved a bit! I really combined different elements of different techniques and did my best to pull everything I know together. I really feel like on page 2 that my gestures really came together.

Gesturing can be great fun when the artist can really feel and understand the forms and volumes of the human body. It is like rhythm.

Miku progress

As promised, I am doing more illustrations lately. So I figured I would update everyone on my progress in my interpretation of the popular Japanese Idol "Hatsune Miku".

Started with a simple 5 minute gesture, just as we have seen posted frequently here! Then gradually I sculpted in some detail...

Not finished yet! Still gotta digitally paint her. And when I say digitally paint, I mean, digitally paint. No cell shading here. I am gonna try for full gradients!

Hope you enjoy my progress!

Practice at the park

Good, bad, ugly, its all here on my sketchpad. When things at home get rough, it's great to go to the park and ease your troubles with some gesture drawings!

All of these were done in less than thirty seconds. In all honesty, they were of people running the track, so most of it was done in just a few seconds. Roughly 5 or so. Obviously made for complete practice and not beauty.

I got bored of the BORING people at the park with their repetitive boring poses today... so this tree proved to be more interesting than any of the lowly humans could ever prove to be.

The tree was drawn in 5 minutes. Gestured roughly of course, done mostly without looking at the paper.

Enjoy~

More Subway gestures

Here are more gesture drawings! All done on the subway in ranging from 30 seconds to a minute each. Simple quick gestures made for practice, not for beauty.

Enjoy~ also watch for some new illustrations! I am actually gonna start filling my gallery with STUFF! YEAH! ^^

Research

My big secret project is well under way. I am doing tons of research for it...

This project will essentially be the theme of my entire portfolio. As of now I can't really reveal much about it, and anyone helping me with it literally has to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). I am taking this idea pretty seriously and am going full throttle on it.

Expect to see a lot of the artwork and lore I produce in the future, having to do with this project.

In other news, I have tons of gestures! ... I really am tired though, so I'll upload some tomorrow. It's not a matter of me not having any new artwork to show you guys, so much as me feeling exhausted at the end of the day and not having time to update.

Also, I will have an art Table at Momo Con with sumomomizu and subterranian-hepcat

Sumomomizu, her stuff can be found here-

Subterranian-hepcat, hers here-

Subway gestures

My first time riding using public transportation to get to class! It was indeed a nightmare my first time, but I am sure it will get better as time goes on.

Most artist however, speak of how much doodling, gestures, and ideas are all come up with on the subway. No joke... It is like the artistic inspiration breeding ground!

So I tried taking my own little stab at it. And I can definitely see why! So many people standing and doing different things. Makes for some very gestural drawings. So today I got a few, some I didn't finish, others I did. Most of these were under 60 seconds. A few 30 and under. Very awesome practice.

3D class project

So I've put off a class project for a long freakin time now... "Build an architectural structure using maya" aka... a building. So, as usual, I decided to bend the rules. I still followed them, but I bent the crap out of them. My architectural structure is quite organic. A house that a Faerie/small forest creature would reside in! Above is the concept art and model renders.

This took a freakin long time, and due to the organic nature of the object, the topology tended to wanna tangle during the modeling process... That was quite trying for my first model.

Hope you like it.

Botanical Gesture

Today I wandered into the forest with my friends. While they were having fun on the "S.S. Beached 3" (Their pretend boat...>_>) I was gesturing a tree. I drew the tree basically without even looking at the paper, I spent most of the time on the forms....

In fact, focusing on form and volume as opposed to lines, seems to be bringing me some very nice results lately... I have done a lot of gestures lately, but hopefully I can get to uploading them soon.

Thanks!

3D beginnings

So, I have been fairly busy lately. My carpal tunnel really has set me back a bit, but I still have nonetheless remained quite busy.

My first and foremost project I am working on is a portfolio project I am working on. essentially it is what is going to take up the meat of my portfolio. And pretty much every other portfolio piece I do is going to center around this one project. In the future at a time of my choosing, I shall reveal more. =X

For now, the digital sculpting portion of "Glitch" has begun. It's been going slowly, since I have to actually learn Zbrush all on my own as I go along. I do hope my traditional sculpting skills come in handy for this...

And speaking of traditional sculpting! I have randomly started finishing up and touching up that sculpture I posted on here way back when. Soon I will bake it and paint it!

I have loads of gestures I have done, but honestly... I have been too busy/lazy to post them. I'll do a better job of keeping to my daily updates as promised.

Peace...

Glitch Model Sheet

And here she is! Glitch in all of her beauty. My love child. Yes, I gave birth to her. How? Carefully.

This model sheet actually took a long long time to complete. I finished the first view while streaming... but... My monitor, tablet, and OS all crashed in that order... So I had to basically redraw stuff... not fun.

A few notes for Glitch, her wings are UNFINISHED, her body designs are also UNFINISHED. She is going to have designs all over her body, as well as textures and patterns within her wings.

She is also going to have accessories, and maybe even some costumes... But, all of these are to be designed later on. I really really just needed to get this model sheet out so I can begin the sculpting process.

Lo and behold, that process begins today... ^^

Hope she looks good!

Face Type Sheet

SO HERE IT FINALLY IS! The three options that I have finally formulated for the face of my character I am creating "glitch". As you can tell from my continually pushed back promises of having this up... I was quite methodical with this portion...

Why?

The face of a character is everything. In this case... it reveals what style she is in, her personality, expressions... ect... the face is everything! It truly sets the pace for the entire character and will be the ultimate form of branding and originality for my character...

So... Which face do you guys like?

Live stream progress

http://justin.tv/thegamingtablet

^--- As some of you know I just got done streaming here this evening! It went great, tons of viewers and tons of support!

Thank you all who were there for your amazing support! I really appreciate it and am going to do my best next time to provide a much better experience... Starting with a better cam, better lighting, better setup... ^^

Stay on the lookout for that face option sheet. Got a bit behind on it, but believe me! It is in progress.

Until next time! Check out thegamingtablet to watch some great artist and have a fun time watching some hardcore gamers... =o

Which body type?

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr218/x4Leafx/BodyTypeSheet.jpg

My next step in developing 'Glitch" Is figuring out what body type she will have! As always, options options options!

Note... That under each category is a body type on the bottom, and that body type in a various pose that accentuates some of that body type's good qualities.

I noticed that despite actually having very different bodies, some of these when posed look similar!

So which body type do you guys like?

Next up, the face type sheet! I shall work on that tomorrow...

I hope to have the final drawing done, and the digital sculpt ready to start by the end of next week.

So as promised, here is my progress on turning Lauress from an anime style, to a more realistic style.

It has presented many challenges, but nonetheless I am happy so far. Once details such as symbols and wings get added (Oh and don't forget about color!) I am sure she will look a little more familiar!

I really tried to give her pose and expression a very dark feel... The model that I referenced for this truly inspired me to experiment with this. I saw a picture of the model and I thought to myself "She has hips that look just like Lauress's!"

In progress botanical texture

Here is another botanical study in progress. I took my watercolor block to the park and literally sat down and started painting this interesting looking tree! I must say, it is a complicated texture... I need to take a photo reference shot of it, but basically...

the tree's bark is peeling off like sheets of paper... Add in lighting as a factor, and the texture of the trees bark becomes very complex to paint.

So far all I have is the base color down and a little bit of the bark texture down ontop of that...

I need to finish adding the bark texture, then touching up with various shade and light details.

My mind is a bit too "micro" and I need to macro up a bit. Getting down the shape of the texture first, then moving on to detail might speed up the overall process.

Gestures

Here is a gesture for the day. A woman leaning against a wall. I feel like I sorta got the hips a bit wrong.. I mean... it feels decent, but I know it definitely could be pushed.

Heh, I have a lot of female gestures. I guess they are just more fun... *shrug*

Botanical study

Characters? Or environments? That is the choice I am constantly faced with in my major. Well, I love them both, So I am going to practice both.

So in order to practice environments, I have started off with doing a basic botanical study of the trunk of a tree.

Most people wouldn't bother to study their own body, much less a tree. Two parallel lines with a few shades of brown and we are done, right? Wrong. Trees in many ways are more complex than human beings in form. Despite standing straight up, trees have curvature, they have form, they have motion, and they have very gestural poses. Not only that, but trees have more gradients and more complex textures than a human body would ever have.

It's the background artist job to master all of these elements, and believe me, there are more aspects to a background than there ever will be with characters.

Every videogame is 20% character 80% background. And believe me, it's a very complex and diverse 80% that requires due respect and attention. So today I have begun to pay my respects!

btw, this was done in watercolors. Watercolors and various paints are primarily how I will gesture my botanicals, landforms, and environmental surveys.

Technology issues!

Ugh... Technology is really being a jerk to me. With little money, getting a computer that can do what I need it to is a royal pain... So for now I have to deal with using POS machines my friend's lend me, and dealing with the absolute crap internet provider my mother uses when I visit home on weekends.

It's great...

Anyways... less of that, more art! First up today, we have a little bit more on "Glitch" my character that I am going to design, and then model. So today we focused on beefing up her wing designs a bit more, mainly her right wing. The idea behind the right wing is that it's supposed to look as if it is falling apart, glitching out, or in general coming apart. I attempted this appeal, while also doing my best to not compromise the overall silhouette design. This seems like a fairly strong spread to me... What do you guys think?

And a gesture from yesterday... ugh... I was having technology issues yesterday, and found myself unable to post this gesture. But here it is! A woman curled up sleeping. She feels a bit off with her proportions and various forms... But... I suppose that is something I can always push, should I choose to use this in the future.

Sorry for the break in updates

Sorry for the small pause in my daily sketch updates. This week has been a bit hectic. First off, AWA was this past weekend! Yay! It was a lot of fun, and very productive! I passed out tons of free art prints that all had my information on the back, so that really helped get me some exposure as well as got my name out there. I look forward to befriending and seeing more from all of the artist there that I met and exchanged info with!

So... For now! I have just a few simple gestures.

Gestures

Gearing up for AWA in two days! Really excited. Today I spent all day making my website. I finished it, but the Godaddy servers need 24-48 hours to update the changes. I really hope the site is up in time!

ohh ohh! I got my prints today that I am going to pass out. And they look awesome. I was very pleased about that.

Right now I am working on new decor for my Blog here, as well as working on personalizing my Facebook Fanpage, and twitter page.

Hopefully everything will come together right as the convention arrives.

Look forward to seeing some new paintings, digital, and traditional! Also, after the convention I am putting my Glitch character designs on full throttle. So get psyched for that!

For now here are today's gestures. Total defense man, and this woman doing a ballancing gesture.

Despite both being extremely standard poses... they were actually very challenging.

Final Storyboarding Project

So, for my scriptwriting and storyboarding class, we had final projects recently.

The project was to take the stoyboards we had been sketching all quarter, and render them in higher detail and color them.

I got special permission from the teacher to try out this Noir style instead of doing normal coloring, and I have to say... I truly enjoyed it.

All of the frames I did traditionally in white charcoal, White prisma colored pencil, and Sharpie paint pen.

The original storyboard had 63 frames in it, and for the final animatic I was forced to drop that down to 21 frames. I definitely needed more frames, however, I did the best with the time that I was given.

I hope you enjoy! I have been meaning to post progress shots of the frames for weeks. But, the final product will give you the feel of what I have been working on.

Hard work

And there you have it... The product of several hard days works.

I was worried about this one, but it came out all right I think. If you show up at anime weekend atlanta, look for me at the artist alley, you will get a free print of this piece!

I was going to post progress shots of some story board images I have been working on. But jesus christ. This Blogger engine sucks.
I have literally been attempting to resize and upload these pictures for a soild hour now. I am loosing too much sleep over this. So until tomorrow... Fjlkd;lkj;lkja
